Norman M. Klein describes how documentary evidence ‘is a remnant left over by chance’. Our understanding of spaces, objects and events comes largely from our interpretation of those documentary sources – themselves interpretations – to which we have access. All forms of documentation are as much about their medium and the decisions or otherwise of the author, as well as what it is they profess to document. These records are suggestions, alluding to what may have been, but never able to state with certainty – they are subjective and fallible. Using photography, sculpture, installation and audio, I create works which examine what is un-said and what’s absent, creating a blurring between a documentary idea and an artistic approach.
