ARTIST STATEMENT

Andrew Maughan’s paintings exist in the unstable border between figuration and abstraction, visible form and nebulous formlessness. His work pushes these mutable, fluctuating states exploring their own materiality, surface qualities and the emergent disparity between the real and depictions of the real (or the visible) through painting.

Though at first seemingly savage and instantaneous, Maughan’s paintings are in reality, and upon closer inspection, highly laboured and layered. They exist as an indexical trace of the time and process involved in their making; as an accumulation of the deliberate (choice of colours, composition) and the accidental or improvised (drips, scribbles, repainted parts).
