Nicola’s practice integrates live performance, visual art and contemporary music composition.
Performance based research questions our understanding of the ways in which we interact with, create and are affected by our environment, through movement and sound. Disciplines include durational and body-based performance, site-specific work, sound design, live installation and social sculpture.
As artist/curator, Nicola’s approach focuses on moments of integration between the curatorial and creative processes, with an objective to producing moments of artistic questioning which return the subject to a position of enquiry.
Nicola’s diverse practice aims to establish a conceptually-based creative way of working which combines the personal, creative and intellectual in a socially intensive atmosphere, to foster new ideas for how to live, work and show art.
Nicola is currently working on the long-term research project, Life Without Buildings in partnership with xsite Architecture, working towards a new commission for Wunderbar Festival 2013. Through a series of public performances, Life Without Buildings aims to create opportunities for audiences to creatively explore their relationship to the built environment and to engage in a social and political dialogue around wider issues of ethical principles and practice within architectural practice and the public realm.
Alongside her practice as an independent artist, Nicola is also associate artist of new performance and theatre company Tender Buttons and has worked as an producer, researcher and educator of a variety of local and national organizations including ~Flow, AV Festival, Wunderbar Festival, Prague Quadrennial Festival of Theatre and Design 2011, Kingston Universities MA programme and Central St. Martin’s School of Art.
She recently completed a MA in Curation with Distinction, focusing on contemporary performance and visual art and begun a practice-based MRes in Performance in September 2012.
