FIVE JOBS+ | Liverpool Beach Huts

Between Saturday 11 June and Sunday 3 July 2016  Liverpool’s waterfront was lined with beach huts, celebrating British culture, new technology and art, as part of the International Festival for Business 2016. Curated by arts organisation Metal, the Beach Huts project animated the International Festival for Business site across a three week period.

The NewBridge Project’s beach hut FiveJobs+ was conceived by studio members Aaron Guy and Andrew Maughan, in collaboration with Dean Crawford, Graeme Durant and Joseph Shaw.

Five Jobs+ condensed the lifecycle of business, redevelopment and regeneration into 3 weeks. The structure transformed each weekend to present a new set of questions for debate:

What does the future of work looks like? In light of technological advances and out-sourcing, will our labour force soon face terminal unemployment? Is gentrification using culture and communities as commodities upon which to trade? Are property developers really heartless capitalists?

Liverpool Beach Huts – a waterfront encounter between business and alternative thinking

Artists, makers, poets, performers and creative entrepreneurs will occupy the beach huts creating temporary stations for live music, workshops, performances and conversations throughout the festival. There will be a trail of 20 unique huts starting at the Exhibition Centre, through the Albert Dock and onto the main thoroughfare of the Strand (strand being the old English word for beach).

This location will attract festival delegates and the general public to find out more about what Liverpool and the North’s creative industries has to offer. Each cluster of Beach Huts will contain a selection of new commissions some of which will showcase the work of creative organisations from the Northern Powerhouse cities of Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield and Hull.
