EXHIBITION PREVIEW FRIDAY 2ND DECEMBER 6PM
EXHIBITION RUNS 6TH – 8TH DECEMBER 12 – 6PM
Victoria Gray, Stiff Baroque (2011) Photo: Nathan Walker
Victoria Gray’s practice is located between performance and sculpture, or, performances that are sculptures and sculptures that are performances. Using minimal materials, primarily the body, she explores the politics of movement and ways in which sociocultural factors inscribe and exert control over the body.
Through performance actions, Victoria considers how the body might be antagonistic and resistant to dominant techniques of corporeal inscription, silencing and subordination.
For Action Relay, Victoria will respond to the ephemera left by previous actions within the space employing strategies such as the construction of assemblages, automatic writing and sculptural interaction with objects. She will also introduce elements from past performance works, emphasizing the overlapping nature of the making process where one inevitably merges with another.
Following this performative process she will install the remains in video, image, sound and sculptural form. The installation is not intended as a fixed product but an extension of a process that is in itself a performance; rough, fluxing, ad-hoc, D.I.Y and contingent.
Selected previous works include performances at Performance S p a c e (London), Sideshow 2010, British Art Show 7 (Nottingham) and Elevator Gallery (London).
Action Relay is a collaboration between The NewBridge Project and Wunderbar, launching as part of Wunderbar Festival 2011. Throughout the exhibition, NewBridge Space will host week-long residencies for seven artists or artist groups. During their week each artist will develop new work to be performed in a series of one-off evening events.
Following each performance, all the equipment and props used will be left in the gallery for subsequent artists to interact and work with. The show will evolve as an ad-hoc and multidisciplinirary series, engaging artists and viewers with a progression of immediate reactions to events held in previous weeks.
