CANNED Call For Submissions

CANNED MAGAZINE  ISSUE IV – THE POLITICS OF REPRESENTATION

Deadline: Friday 21st September

Does the apparent insurgence in politically motivated art indicate real dissent, a sign of revolutionary times (as suggested by the Occupy Movement, the UK riots, the Arab Spring, the Pussy Riot trials) or rather chronic faddism: that art and politics have recognised their criticisms and new forms of opposition, cynically absorbing them into their own modus operandi?

Can art and culture, in and of themselves, actively change society? Or merely offer alternative ways of seeing, thinking and living which may be a commentary, precursor or catalyst to – but not an active agent in – real political change? Can art ever be truly revolutionary? Is it possible to inhabit an entirely new political stand point without conforming to existing structures, innate logic or  bowing to mythological, aesthetic, historical and institutional constraints? Or can revolutionary art really be based on appropriation, mimicry and détournement?

These are some of the questions posed by CANNED ISSUE IV –The Politics of Representation. As the title suggests, whilst we embark on this enquiry through the lens of contemporary art it is examined within a wider ecology of political, social and economic systems, exchanges and ideologies.  We invite contributions both from within and beyond the purview of art criticism including (but not limited to) art history, politics, economics, technology, literature, conceptual writing and philosophy. Our aim is not necessarily to find a conclusion to the questions posed (and many more may arise through this process) but rather to open a dialogue, through a range of perspectives, on the current and ongoing relationship between art and politics and the endeavour to find new forms of artistic and political representation.

CANNED is a limited edition magazine (1000 copies) distributed both nationally and internationally. For more information about the magazine and previous editions please see the website www.cannedmagazine.com.

The NewBridge Project is pleased to announce the opening of its newest exhibition space – PH Space

Exhibition opens Friday 10th August 6pm – 8pm.
Second floor – NewBridge Studios, Norham House, 12 New Bridge St West, Newcastle, NE1 8AW.
After party in NewBridge Studios 8 till late.

PH. is a new exhibition space based in The NewBridge Project, Newcastle upon Tyne (UK) dedicated to photography, film and post-photography aesthetics. PH. is a space to promote, exhibit, discuss and re-examine contemporary photographic practice.

PH. aims to examine how the mediums digital advances and the increased amount of mobile photographic devices has created a more accessible and potentially democratic medium – everyone is a photographer now.

As darkrooms and film become less and less, our memories are now held in the endless capacity of the digital ether, conducted via screen, the fight between pixel vs chemical. Has photography finally lost its physical presence? PH. aims to re-examine the current state of photography, how we now choose to view it and its many possible futures.

Linear Shift

22nd June 2012, 6-9pm
The Annex, 1st floor, The NewBridge Project

Norham House
12 New Bridge Street West
Newcastle upon Tyne
NE1 8AW

Urban locations are highly complex spaces, existing at multiple levels formed by historical, geographical, economical, political and social actions. These do not exist as static constructs, but rather each level is continuously in flux, whilst overlapping, conflicting and adjoining with those other layers which together comprise the urban environment.*

Using the site of the former Wallsend Maritime Research Centre as a paradigm where multiple layers of time co-exist in the same space, Linear Shift brings together observations from this site and the surrounding riverside landscape in an immersive audio-visual installation.

Part of the industrial landscape that characterised Newcastle for much of the last century, the site is now in a state of transition. Caught in a moment of economic uncertainty, it hovers in a limbo before its intended transformation into a contemporary riverside business park. A story that resonates with many post-industrial cities across the country, Linear Shift is a snapshot in the history of this place – a precarious moment that is both significant yet unremarkable,

Presented as a sculptural video and surround sound installation, the work combines techniques drawn from the artists’ backgrounds in documentary film and still photography. Whilst this approach to the visuals keeps the eye detached and observational, a highly choreographed soundscape playfully animates the film beyond the screen and introduces alternative narratives to the audience.

Linear shift is the result of a new collaboration between Newcastle-based artists Taryn Edmonds and Lauren Healey.

THE NEWBRIDGE PROJECT AND VARC COLLABORATION: Response: A Rural Urban Conversation (Part 2)

Response: A Rural / Urban Conversation is a two part collaborative project between Visual Arts in Rural Community’s (VARC) recent artist in residence Jenny Purrett and five artists from NewBridge Studio: Holly Watson, Lauren Healey, David Lisser, Rory Biddulph and Thomas Whittle. Response provokes conversation about the impact of location upon practice by requiring artists to produce work actively influenced by contrasting environments.

The first part of Response took place in June 2011 at Highgreen, Northumberland where the five NewBridge artists worked with Jenny at the rural location for three days. The impact of the relocation on the artists’ practice led to the production of new pieces in response to the rural environment, culminating in an exhibition and discussion session at Highgreen.

Documentation of work from Response: A Rural / Urban Environment (Part 1) can be found at http://www.varc.org.uk/special-projects/response-a-rural-urban-conversation.

Part Two will mirror the intense making period of Part 1, with the artists creating work linked to the previous pieces, but responding to the urban environment of the shop unit in Eldon Square in Newcastle city centre. The project will conclude with an exhibition at Eldon Square from 26th November until 18th December, an artists discussion on 8th December from and a free publication available at the exhibition space.

Opening times: Monday – Saturday, 10am – 5pm

Sunday, 12 – 4pm

Preview: Friday 25th November, 5 – 7:30pm

Artists discussion: Thursday 8th December, 6pm

Location: Eldon Square, old ‘New Look’ shop, near Monument entrance

NEW TEMPORARY PREMISES / UPCOMING EXHIBITION

We’ve just signed a temporary lease on an empty shop in Eldon Square shopping centre for an exhibition including the work of 5 NewBridge Studio Holders, Lauren Healey, David Lisser, Holly Watson, Rory Biddulph and Thomas Whittle and also work from the recent VARC artist in residence Jenny Purrett. CANNED – CALL FOR WRITERS.

CANNED, the exciting and original new magazine of art and contemporary culture is inviting submissions for its second edition.

Following the success of the inaugral edition of CANNED earlier this year, we are already developing the second edition to be published in October 2011. THE NEWBRIDGE PROJECT CALL FOR ARTISTS.

The NewBridge Project is an artist-led initiative based in Newcastle city centre that provides a platform from which artists are able to practice in a discursive and supportive community. We are committed to developing ideas-led visual art in the North East and establishing a critical mass from which emerging artists are able to move toward professional practice. The NewBridge Project makes use of an abandoned office block as a studio complex and has converted an empty shop into NewBridge Space, a street level, publicly accessible gallery that promotes new work from the region and further a field.

We are currently seeking around 25 artists who will become active residents within The NewBridge Project. Artists benefit from:

- Low-cost and spacious 24 hour access studio space in Newcastle city centre. The premises can generously cater for any scale of artistic practice and are set out over five expansive floors.

- Studio visits, talks and critiques from established members of the arts community; we organise regular creative and critical development opportunities.

- A support network from which to cultivate further opportunities and develop new work. There are currently 40 artists working in the studios – this number is soon to rise to over 60. We are committed to NewBridge Studios remaining a cooperative and productive working environment.

- The opportunity to join one of two committees that assist with the direction of key areas within the project – curating the NewBridge Space exhibition programme and studio and event management. We are always open to new suggestions to expand our programme of events and projects.

- Invites to all the events held at The NewBridge Project including exhibition openings, parties, film evenings, discussion groups and artist talks.

To apply please email up to six images of recent work, an artist CV and a short paragraph outlining what you think you will bring to the project. We ask artists for a minimal service charge of £15 per week to cover our operating costs.

Deadline for applications will be Sunday 19th June at 6pm
