Trevor H. Smith

Artist Statement:
My work is predominantly text-based, and ranges in scale from business cards to billboards. I have used a variety of techniques including machine-routed MDF board, lipstick on mirrors, and letterpress printing. I also write proposals that function as completed works. My ideas are as likely to have occurred to me on the way to the studio as they are to have been jotted into a notepad ten years ago. The essence of my practice is to distill each idea into its most effective and efficient form. I arrived at language as a medium as an undergraduate, during which time I sought to create work without any sale or resale value. I found that an element of text was intrinsic to everything I made or did, eventually settling on language itself as my preferred mode of presentation, despite its having often proved itself as misleading as it is efficient, and not always by design.
