Neil Armstrong

I was born in 1984 in Gateshead and graduated with First Class Honours in fine art from the University of Sunderland in 2011. During and since graduating I have partaken in several small scale exhibitions and collaborations including working with Empty Shop Durham and CIRCA.

Through exploring the idea of ‘escapism’ in the 21st century, my work grows out of organic practice and results in transient structures and worlds that struggle to manifest. I take materials that are largely close to hand or cast aside by industry, as such they vary in strength with the integrity of the fabric, or lack there of,  helping dictate the fragile construction of the work as it develops.

By testing the formal properties of internal and external space, I seek to create sculptures that simultaneously exclude and include the viewer, creating objects of self reflection.
