Our buildings are currently closed to the public whilst we move space – but we are still hosting offsite and online events.

Nellie Saunby

My work is concerned with noticing the weirdness and importance of familiar and everyday moments, questioning the meaning and weight we give to certain objects and situations. Through focusing on recognisable moments or objects and presenting them back as if they had a specific purpose or importance, it shifts the familiar into the unfamiliar, pointing to how ridiculous and strange this world can be. Humour also plays a vital role with my practice, not only does it work to offset the weight and emptiness present within the work, it also adds a self-awareness and a certain yet bizarre subjectivity. This allows the work to fluctuate between having a meaningful, heightened importance and a threatening emptiness. It also functions as a response to the overload of information present in contemporary culture, the work has a post-internet awareness, oscillating between sincerity and irony, which is presented through the repeated language and imagery.
