Rene McBrearty

My work is interested in the formation of identity and the process of art making. I use performance, sculpture and drawing as tools to play: whilst making I explore a materials characteristics, I then give the material a personality, this in turn becomes a performance, and the process begins again. My performances and installations typically

investigate issues surrounding gender, power play, race and the notion of the artist as divine. A frustration at the inadequacy of language informs my practice; words can be misunderstood and body language misconstrued.

“There are experiences of landscape that will always resist articulation and of which words only offer a remote echo-or to which silence is by far the best response. Language is always late for its subject.”
