Roberto Picciau’s practice merges the use of both ecstatic and banal materials to create dynamic artefacts with extra-ordinary reach. He describes his process of art making as meditative and brooding, as he has observed evolutions, expansions and contractions during the course of creative action. By obsessively effecting repetitious layering, mark making and erasing, the influence these actions allows Picciau to engage with deeper metaphysical concepts.
Picciau often makes links to notions of causality, and the perennial counteracting forces of creation and destruction. Whilst analysing feelings of awe in direct response to the sublime, the utilisation of the nostalgic appreciation of workmanship is found to evoke woke states in direct response of the work, illuminating the value placed upon the dialogue that follows each subjective experience.
