Sophie’s practice revolves around the creation of an alter-ego known as Betty, and a digital world for her to inhabit through combining the mediums of moving image, photography and sculpture. She uses performing as Betty as a means to playfully investigate gender performance, the body, popular culture and art world conventions. Combining appropriated material with green screen footage in order to create a sense of the familiar and to situate Betty firmly within the context of popular culture, she draws on research from across disciplines to theorise Betty’s body as a political site.
