We have commissioned Graeme Hopper (Grassi Art) as part of Blazing New Worlds — a programme of commissions, events and workshops at The NewBridge Project which celebrates its 11th Birthday.
SHIELD/FIELD is a new commission developed by local artist Graeme Hopper (Grassi Art), and will feature 25 new works, including collage photography, and two audio pieces that have been recoded around the Shieldfield area.
Using their own personal photographs of the area, archive images from the Shieldfield neighbourhood and their own personal collection of materials, Graeme has created a work that connects the community through abstract observations whilst highlighting the developing nature of the area and those nearby.
Graeme Hopper is a Sunderland artist who has deep passion for mixed media, paper collage, photography, poetry and sound production. Using collage, sound, and photography to set aside the familiar, Graeme Hopper’s practice investigates the developing bridge between the surreal and the literal. Creating abstract works that are regularly built with layers, depth and weight. Graeme’s work is greatly envisioned, with each piece revealing itself further and further at the end of each viewing.
Using his own personal photos, archive photos and the endless supply of materials from his own private collection, Graeme will create a show that connects the community through abstract, surreal observations, while being continually keen to highlight the current developing nature of the area and of those nearby.
Graeme is also the founder of Boundaries 2021, a brand new exciting music and art festival that aims to champion, support and promote those often overlooked, curious, exciting and fun performers. Coming to Sunderland this November, the idea is to host an open minded, 2 days, including wild and wonderful adventurous sound and performances, alongside warm welcoming temperaments.

Blazing New Worlds is a programme of commissions, events and workshops in celebration of The NewBridge Project’s 11th Birthday. Throughout the programme a series of open calls and funding opportunities were released and supported projects were hosted in the gallery and online. Commissions by the artists Graeme Hopper (Grassi Art) and Cassie Thornton have been publicly displayed in the gallery throughout the programme, since October.
We commissioned Slack’s founder Jon Cornbill, to construct a radio booth that has been on display in the NewBridge gallery throughout the Slack’s Radio residency. The first round of the residency saw Slack’s Radio take over the gallery with a programme of music, performance, spoken word and conversation.
