Antiuniversity Now Festival : Deschooling Society

Using the iconic Ivan Illich argument and book (Deschooling Society) as a starting point, how might we as artists, as a society, share our learning, our privilege and challenge the elitism of certification, so as to develop a more fair, accessible and equal society? How can we create and share space to have conversations and re-claim learning – self led/self directed learning rather than competition or hierarchy?

The Greek ‘scholḗ’/School, meaning leisure employed in learning: how can we foster and support a more radical ethical alternative to the elitist systems we have now? Places to have conversations and learn.

We worked in small groups to explore these questions and develop ideas to take forward. This event was initiated and facilitated by Angela Kennedy, hosted by The NewBridge Project.

This event took place as part of the Antiuniversity Now festival June 2016.

This event is part of Practice makes Practice, an artist development programme run by artists for artists, initiated by The NewBridge Project.

Practice makes Practice focuses on developing artistic talent and equipping artists with the necessary skills to manage their practice, bridging the gap between art school, studio practice, the gallery and beyond.

The programme is open to our Studio Members, and to the wider arts community through an associate Artist Membership. To become an Artist Member please click here.
