Artist Talk with Sophie Bates and Nick Thomas

Wed 27th March 2019

6 – 8pm
The NewBridge Project, Carliol House Co-Work Space

FREE – ALL WELCOME

In response to Open Call – Group Show @ NewBridge Podcast, artists Sophie Bates and Nick Thomas are producing a film inspired by works including Krzysztof Kieslowski’s Talking Heads (1980), Pier Paulo Pasolini’s Comizi D’Amore (1965), and Sharon Hayes’ Ricerche: three (2013). From this they will interview people on the ferry crossing between Amsterdam and Newcastle – the audio from the interviews will form part of Caitlin Merrett King’s second series Group Show podcast, produced as part of her residency at The Newbridge Project.

Join us to hear more about Caitlin’s project and Sophie and Nick’s wider practice.

Biography

Sophie Bates and Nick Thomas are artists based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Originally from the UK – Sophie studied for her undergraduate degree at Newcastle University and Nick at the Glasgow School of Art – both graduated from the Master Fine Art programme at the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam, in 2018.

While studying, Sophie and Nick shared a studio and began to collaborate in various ways: featuring in and assisting each other with video works, performing together, and producing an eight-hour radio show called FOMO fm. With fellow video artists Marta Hryniuk, Anna Maria Luczak and Erika Roux, they set up WET – a film and video co-operative whose members come together to pursue a mode of production based on collaboration and mutual support. In April Sophie and Nick will be producing a quiz at Onono, a studio and project space in the south of Rotterdam.
