Bubikopf is an art history lecture on gender in the Weimar Republic that morphs. An examination of women in modernity in Berlin, with their new opportunities to be independent in the city, to go to art school, perform in cabarets. This contrasts the male experience—the traumatised and horrifically disfigured men returning from the WW1. Looking at examples in art and entertainment the lecture will highlight different gendered experiences, including the showgirl. Through hearing the words of her mentor, the writer, Leslie Dick, and also the performer, Ashley Fuller, Alison J Carr shifts from historian to speculator. Weaving together gendered forms of female visibility through projecting a glamorous totality and the invisible emotional work of connecting with an audience, this piece spotlights women’s entertaining, creative and avant garde work.

After the performance there’ll be a Q+A with Alison.
