Join us for a programme of workshops, performances and gatherings that create space for collective grieving around Transgender Day of Remembrance and World Aids Day.
For Trans Day of Remembrance, poet and drag king Kaan K and facilitator and gardener Leo Hargreaves create space for collective grieving, with an invitation to create a living altar in our gallery. Join the workshop on Tuesday 19 November or visit the altar until 30 November and take a cutting to grow at home.
On Friday 22 November join Kaan, Leo and members of TopSoil queer gardening group for a vigil for Transgender Day of Remembrance. Gather for ceremony and food.
On Saturday 30 November, we host Red Reminds Me, an afternoon of film and video commissioned by Visual Aids for Day With(out) Art – a day of mourning and action that uses art to respond to the ongoing HIV and AIDS crisis.
In our Reading Room alongside Cuttings, we are showing Pedagogue (1988) – an agit-prop video was made by Stuart Marshall, Neil Bartlett and Newcastle Polytechnic students against Section 28 – a British Government legislation (1988-2000/2003) prohibiting the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality in education. The video and a selection of books and archival materials will be on display from 20 November to 13 December.
On 4 & 5 December artist Conal McStravick will host PDG x GRA, a two-day performance and media workshop using the gender inclusive clothes bank The Wardrobe as a set for remaking the 1988 video Pedagogue. Mapping gender, queer and aids activism in the UK past and present, the workshop explores the echoes of Section 28 in current debates around the Gender Recognition Act (England) and the Gender Reform Bill (Scotland), which discourage teachers from ‘promoting’ transgenderism.
Committee members Kaan K and Holly Argent developed a Care Park to sit alongside Cuttings: Ceremonies of Trans Grief. This care pack is designed as a resource for queer and trans people and others who may be affected by the themes and experiences in our events series. It highlights potentially difficult subject matter and points you towards resources that will be able to help or provide further support. It also highlights the support available from The NewBridge Project during events and tools you can use to support yourself.
A quiet, grounding space and mental health support will be available throughout the events.
Our building has lifts to the gallery, accessible and gender-neutral toilets, baby changing and breastfeeding facilities and two accessible parking bays. You can watch a walkthrough of our building and learn more about accessibility here.
