DIY Digital: Animation with Petra Szemán

Develop transferrable skills for a wide range of software to suit your moving image/animation dreams and visions! In this workshop, we will focus on a free alternative to AfterEffects techniques using DaVinci Resolve.

Please bring a selection of images or videos with you. These can be of your artwork, pictures from the internet, or any videos you have taken; anything works! There is no need for it to hold deep artistic meaning.

What you need for this session:

• a ticket (book below!) – tickets are free for members, £3 for non-members. You can become a member here.
• a laptop (we can provide 1 per session)
• a willingness to experiment – no prior experience necessary!

Skills you’ll get:

• Understand how video compositing works
• Make simple animated scenes
• Get some experience with a NLE (non-linear editing) programme
• Grasp how node-based editing is done
• Confidence with intense software interfaces

This is a hybrid workshop. You can attend in person or online. If you opt to attend remotely, a member of staff will contact you on the day of the workshop with a Zoom link and, more info about the session and a digital code of conduct.

More important things to know:

• You will be emailed before the session with instructions on downloading the software in advance. Please keep an eye on your emails!
• NewBridge will provide one laptop per session for participants to try out, but we encourage you to bring your own laptop so you can follow along.
• We are limiting in-person attendance to 10 people per session so please only book if you intend to attend (or let us know if you can’t make it). If you are attending online, you will be sent a Zoom link on the day of the workshop.
• A member of NewBridge staff will be managing the Zoom room throughout. Another member of NewBridge staff will help facilitate the session alongside the main facilitator. One member of NewBridge staff will be on the door and helping with refreshments.
• The session facilitator will generally do an introduction to the industry standard paid-for platform. You will be encouraged to watch along. They will then do a more participatory ‘how-to’ using free and open-sourced software.
• Refreshments will be provided.
• Each session is separate; you do not need to attend them all.
