DIY Digital: Sound Design with Laura Stutter Garcia

Join us for an exciting session exploring sound creation with some of the most common Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and interactive environments.

We’ll begin with a brief overview of Ableton, a powerful tool for music production. Then, we’ll dive into Pure Data, an open-source programming language for real-time multimedia creation. We will copy community-shared patches, using samples and other tricks to create spontaneous, fun and quick forms of music and sound. 

At the end of the session, we’ll share what we’ve created, discuss future possibilities, and come together for a live laptop ensemble performance!

What you need for this session:

• a ticket (book below!) – tickets are free for members, £3 for non-members. You can become a member here.
• a laptop (we can provide 1 per session)
• a pair of headphones or earbuds
• a willingness to experiment – no prior sound or music experience necessary!

This is a hybrid workshop. You can attend in person or online. If you opt to attend remotely, a member of staff will contact you on the day of the workshop with a Zoom link and more info about the session and a digital code of conduct.

More important things to know:

• You will be emailed before the session with some instructions of software to download in advance. Please keep an eye on your emails!
• Please bring headphones and a laptop if you can! NewBridge will provide one laptop per session for participants to try out but we encourage you to bring your own laptop so you can follow along.
• We are limiting in-person attendance to 10 people per session so please only book if you intend to attend (or let us know if you can’t make it). If you are attending online, you will be sent a Zoom link on the day of the workshop.
• A member of NewBridge staff will be managing the Zoom room throughout. Another member of NewBridge staff will help facilitate the session alongside the main facilitator. One final member of NewBridge staff will be on the door and helping with refreshments.
• The session facilitator will generally do an introduction to the industry standard paid-for platform. You will be encouraged to watch along. They will then do a more participatory ‘how-to’ using free and open-sourced software.
• Refreshments will be provided.
• Each session is separate; you do not need to attend them all.
