Saturday Social: Eid Decorations with Kaltouma Hassaballah

Join Kaltouma Hassaballah to create beautiful decorations for Eid! Together, we’ll make a colourful banner using fabric and other materials, which will be displayed at our Eid celebration on 1 April.

We will provide materials, but feel free to bring an old t-shirt, tote bag or fabric to use! This workshop is suitable for all ages, and you can drop in at any time—no experience is necessary.

Kaltouma is an artist, chef and community leader based in Shieldfield. Kaltouma specialises in Sudanese cuisine and caters for numerous events in the local community often working in collaboration with businesses such as Big River Bakery. She also works for community co-operative Dwellbeing, where she leads a collective of local chefs made up from women who have moved to Shieldfield with similar experiences to her own. Kaltouma uses Henna, drawing, printing, oils and events as part of her artistic practice.

Saturday Social is an exciting drop-in workshop suitable for all ages and enjoy a delicious free lunch from Big River Bakery. Come hang out in our gallery, where you can catch up on our current exhibition, grab a cuppa and have a chat!

Saturday Social is for adults and families who would like to enjoy a lunch, try something creative or chat with other people from Shieldfield.

Unfortunately, Saturday Social is not for members of our youth programme to attend unsupervised.

Saturday Social started as a way to get to know more people from our community and use our gallery as a social space. We understand galleries can be intimidating spaces, so the idea of Saturday Social is that (with a bit more going on, like pies and printmaking) the gallery will seem less intimidating.

The gallery is wheelchair accessible, and we have a mix of chairs and places to sit in the space. This event might be noisy, but you’re able to stay as long or as short as you like. Someone in the bookshop will meet you and explain where the event is.
