Exodysis After Hours

Fri 4th March 2022 6 pm - 9 pm NewBridge Gallery

Join Abel Shah, Aaron Tan and Incursions for an evening in our Gallery for live audio and visual interruptions throughout the evening.

Friday 4 March

6 – 9 pm (come by any time)

With collaboration at the core of their practice and an interest in the gallery as a space of facilitation, Abel Shah’s body of work has developed alongside ongoing dialogues with fellow practitioners and collaborators by thinking about how meaning and relationships are built through language and exploring alternative ways of communicating.

As part of Exodysis II artist duo Abel Shah invited artists Aaron Tan and Incursions to ‘interrupt’ the sculpture installation and embark in a conversation through alternative forms of dialogue with new audio and visual responses. On Friday 4 March, between 6 – 9 pm, The NewBridge Project will be open to the public for Exodysis After Hours.

There will be refreshments, social space and live audio and visual responses to the sculpture installation.

Aaron Tan

Aaron Tan’s invitation to interrupt the sculpture installation is formulated as a way of working and moving through the materials, labour, and affects already latent in the space, and attending to them in ways that would be hospitable to other modalities and economies. Here, presence is scripted through an absence in the inhabitation of the ‘after-hours’ of exhibition time, with sculptures and a live stream performance.

Aaron Tan’s practice is invested in the materiality of spaces and how they can be articulated as a porous form of writing. Often working with the found or makeshift materials, his work occupies a transitionary place between the studio and exhibition, revealing spaces in formation and the intimate politics of his artistic labour. Tan is currently the recipient of the ‘LYC in Cumbria’ PhD studentship at the University of Cumbria, undertaking practice-led research on the LYC Museum & Art Gallery (1972-1983) by the artist Li Yuan-chia.

Incursions

Incursions will be performing a new live audio work in The NewBridge Project Gallery space for the duration of the event, nestled into Abel Shah’s sculpture installation, Exodysis II. A collage of field recordings from the city, live mixing and manipulation and music, this audio ‘interruption’ adds another layer to Incursions’ map of the city, a map that moves and shifts and performs with the people who work and walk with them.

Incursions is a project by Archie Smith and Kitty McKay based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Part walking event, part radio project, part archive, Incursions hosts weekly walking forums for anyone to attend, building a collective conversation around space and place, memory and friendship in and around the city.

Their project is always expanding, looking into the spaces, places and venues that facilitate and encourage social engagement. Pop and club cultures inform practices of collective joy, and through the use of sound and audio, Incursions intend to expand an archive that documents space and place, harnessing DIY approaches to sound making and radio broadcasting.
