Join us for February’s For Solidarity Social on Wednesday 17th February, and hear from guest speakers Mwenza Blell and Kat Bevan. The social is an informal gathering and all are welcome.
For Solidarity Socials are regular meet-ups are for organisations, projects, initiatives and individuals in the region who are offering support, mutual aid, and an alternative to the extractive and oppressive mainstream economic system.
These events are also a great opportunity to introduce the initiative you work for and to meet and learn about other grassroots organisations working in the region. You don’t have to be part of an organisation to attend this event!
We will be joined at this event by guest speakers Mwenza Blell and Kat Bevan. Mwenza and Kat responded to The NewBridge Project’s call-out for Co-Investigators during the first lockdown, a group who were selected to gather insights from a wide range of perspectives in response to the outbreak of Coronavirus.

Kat Bevan is an artist and founder of the Artist Food Bank Network – an artist-led, volunteer-run network of artists supporting food banks. Kat is interested in exploring the intersections of art and society and supporting the Newcastle-Gateshead community.
With many artists in precarious work and a dramatic 89% increase in demand for food banks in The Trussell Trust’s network during the coronavirus pandemic in April 2020, Kat is motivated to explore these intersections of art and society. Since graduating, she has moved away from a purely artistic practice involving critique and a practice-led multidisciplinary approach, to community-based action and research through the Artist Food Bank Network.
Dr Mwenza Blell is an anthropologist, with over a decade of experience in research with communities on four continents. Mwenza’s research uses qualitative methods to examine intransigent and often invisible structures of injustice from both the perspective of those at the sharp end of them and those complicit in them. Mwenza has been working with several mutual aid groups carrying out intense and differently-organised activities in response to the crisis.
