Form and Display: Build It

Saturday 19 September, Friday 25 September, Saturday 26 September 2026 10am–4pm NewBridge Gallery

NewBridge members and neighbours* are invited to build a display structure for our next gallery exhibition, Form and Display, with the support of experienced technicians and NewBridge studio holders Joe Shaw, Eve Cromwell and Joseph Jivan-Pengelly.

Form and Display unfolds in two interconnected stages: first, the collective construction of a display structure; and second, the presentation of artworks created by NewBridge members and neighbours. There will be different ways to get involved: helping to make the display structure, exhibiting artwork, and taking part in curating the exhibition.

*This includes studio members, hot-deskers, associates, The Collective Studio and Create/Disrupt members; and anyone who takes part in our regular groups such as Shieldfield Youth Programme and Memory Cafe. Find out how to become a member here.

What to expect

For this first stage, Build It, collaborators will work alongside experienced technicians and NewBridge staff to co-design and co-build the display structure, creating opportunities for practical skill-sharing, collective problem-solving and the joy of working together.

Tasks may include, but are not limited to, planning the build, drilling, cutting wood, painting surfaces, holding ladders, and deciding together where things need to go. There will be a range of tasks to get involved with, so you can take part in whatever way feels comfortable for you. No previous experience needed!

Slots

Build It will take place from 10am–4pm, on the following days:

  • Saturday 19 September
  • Friday 25 September
  • Saturday 26 September

Build It is a drop-in; no booking needed. You are welcome to join us for one or more days, and you don’t need to attend the whole time!

We are building this display structure to create space in the gallery to house as much artwork as possible. If you have any questions, get in touch with NewBridge Communities Producer Dan Goodman by email via dangoodman@thenewbridgeproject.com

After its construction, NewBridge members and neighbours will be invited on a first-come, first-served basis to install their work in, on, or around the display structure. This opportunity to exhibit as part of Form and Display will be available to those who helped build the structure as well as those who did not. The call out to exhibit artworks will be announced separately in the coming weeks.
