This workshop with artist Sarah March invites participants to create their own linocut prints, in response to The Amazonian Rubber Boom: industrialisation, extractivism and violence, currently on display at The NewBridge Project.
We will look at photographs, documents, and stories at a source of inspiration to design prints. You will learn about lino cutting techniques and printmaking and there will also the option to just carve a pre-made design, or you make a design that can be carved into lino after the workshop by Sarah.
The linocuts made in the workshop will be displayed as part of the show as a collaborative sculpture in The NewBridge Project Gallery.
Sarah March is a multimedia artist currently undertaking a Master’s of Fine Art at Newcastle University. Her practice often focuses on uncovering obscure histories through a research-based approach. This research material is then transformed in the studio into installation artworks which question the narratives of archaeology, history, and museum approaches. She seeks to question the role art can play in these spaces to see how it can recontextualise our past. March is from Wiltshire and her practice is based both there and in Newcastle upon Tyne.
The NewBridge Project announces a new exhibition ‘The Amazon Rubber Boom: Industrialisation, extractivism, and violence’, developed with guest curators Giuliana Borea and Erna von der Walde. This exhibition will bring together different materials to explore the links between rubber exploitation in the Amazon and its circulation in Europe.
This exhibition is organised with Newcastle University’s Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and has received the Engagement and Place Fund. It will be shown in connection with the Memory Studies Association meeting (July 3–7, 2022) hosted by Newcastle University.
The Amazonian Rubber Boom runs from Friday 30 June – Saturday 22 July and the Gallery is open Wednesday – Saturday, 12pm – 5pm.
