GemArts’ award winning Masala Festival is a mix & blend of the finest South Asian Arts & Culture. This year, The NewBridge Project will be hosting an exhibition by Sajil Kaleem. Fabricated explores our personal relationship to the historical narratives that we collectively create through an expanded sense of painting.

Fabricated explores our personal relationship to the historical narratives that we collectively create through an expanded sense of painting. Sajil’s paintings consider the colonial remnants of buildings in cities that have ignored relationships. An arch in a library in Karachi echoes a doorway in Oxford, and the pre-partition patterned balconies and doorways of Jhelum and Newcastle feature as backdrop in the bustle of the city. Using the visual language of ornate South Asian tradition of beautification, Sajil hopes to create an imagined world that explores the space in between, and how the gaps in narratives become stories in themselves.

GemArts award winning Masala Festival is a weeklong festival celebrating a mix and blend of the finest South Asian Arts and Culture, packed full of performances, exhibitions, events, workshops, pop ups and demonstrations, presented in venues, places and spaces across the North East.
Since its launch in 2016, Masala Festival has become a yearly celebration and a highlight in the North East cultural calendar, bringing audiences the best music, dance, visual arts, film, literature, performance, workshops, family fun days, food events and much more. The programme presents a diverse mix of contemporary and traditional South Asian art forms with regional, national and international artists, produced and curated by GemArts, working alongside key partners from across the region and beyond.
Over 7 days, every July, thousands of people enjoy GemArts Masala Festival, a mix and blend of South Asian arts and culture.
