Join us for a relaxed and dependant friendly social session with artist Alia Gargum.
For the final MOTHEROTHER session of 2024, Alia will be showing us how to prepare a traditional Libyan dish while we talk about the evolution of the MOTHEROTHER project. We will cook and eat the food together as a small celebration at the conclusion of the MOTHEROTHER project for this year.
MOTHEROTHER socials are relaxed and friendly, with time for conversations and creative activity. You can attend with or without your dependent, and we aim to make sessions as supportive and welcoming as possible.
Alia Gargum is a British-Libyan artist based in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK. She composes her work through critical and personal exploration of politics and culture, focusing on her heritage through diasporic means.
Sculpture, paintings and installation elements are reorganised and transformed in an organic manner as part of the artistic process. Alia primarily uses hand-treated steel and hand-manipulated paper to depict signifiers of her past through a contemporary lens.
Alia’s work explores power dynamics that echo into personal relationships, with a focus on the history of Middle Eastern and North African region power structures. Themes of forced migration, exile and identity also converge her works.
MOTHEROTHER is an inclusive and supportive collective for artists who are also caregivers. The term caregiver applies to the broad spectrum of parents, guardians and carers across our community.
MOTHEROTHER is for everyone aspiring to, or currently working within, or associated with the arts.
MOTHEROTHER is founded by Sue Loughlin and supported by Lady Kitt, Dan Russell and Cheryl Gavin.
