Whilst on the Practice Makes Practice – Social Residency, Nathaniel will be looking at the role of performance in the public and social spheres. He is interested in how demotic forces present in the North East have progressively struggled against the dominance of given power structures, traversing through the performance art collective ‘The Basement Group’, to T. Dan Smiths comprehensive devolutionary programs to contemporary ‘Forum Theatre’ workshops.
Alongside this he is particularly interested in understanding the city and surrounding area more from talking with artists and people that live and work there. Nathaniel would like to extend an invitation for people to meet with for a cuppa, a studio visit, a meander through town, a bike ride or just a chat. He looks forward to spending the month in Newcastle and meeting and chatting with you.

Nathaniel Whitfield is a performer, writer, facilitator and collaborator who has just finished the yearlong Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum in New York. He utilizes and combines the critical methodology developed by contemporary cultural studies with performance, video and installation in research led projects that seek to re-articulate and re-materialize physical, political and linguistic spaces. A central concern traversing his practise is an exploration of vocality and the condition of the voice, both symbolically and materially, within the human ecology. We are primarily social beings by and through the voice, we speak of giving ‘voices’ to disenfranchised communities, of creating platforms for ‘voices’ to be heard, of institutional ‘voices’, et al. Different voices, shaped at the intersection of the material and the metaphorical, mediate our world yet their existence as disembodied signifying structures cannot be detached from their material source. The voice, tied to the body and entwined with the external environment exists as the very texture of the social but also as an intimate kernel of subjectivity.
The Practice makes Practice Residency is an annual 4 week residency opportunity that provides artists with time and space to reflect on their practice within an active and engaged community of artists at The NewBridge Project. The residency places collaboration, collectivity and exchange at the heart of it, with the aim of generating peer learning, critical conversation and social interaction.
The Practice makes Practice Residency provides artists with time to test out ideas, experiment, develop networks, research new works/projects and explore new aspects of their practice without any expectation to produce new work.
This residency forms part of Practice makes Practice, an artist development programme run by artists for artists based at The NewBridge Project. During the residency, we will invite the selected artist in residence to input into the wider Practice makes Practice programme through instigating events, workshops or talks informed by their practice, feeding into their professional development and that of our members.
