NewBridge Books presents
A conversation between Craig Pollard & Jess Higgins
In place of a live event, NewBridge Books are pleased to host this recorded conversation, marking the launch of a book by Newcastle-based artist, and NewBridge Associate Member, Craig Pollard.
In May this year, Inside a Gleaming Feeling was published by Glasgow’s The Grass is Green in the Fields for You. It is a book of conference papers, lectures and excerpts on music, art making and the internet. Craig is joined here by Jess Higgins, a Glasgow-based artist and writer who sings in the band Vital Idles and is a key member of Good Press, a volunteer-run bookshop for self published printed matter.
It was recorded in the immediate wake of the book’s release, and feels like a fitting celebration for the launch – a meandering conversation taking in music, art, education, DIY, politics and protest, interspersed with bursts of music; a back and forth that suggests the possibility of a kind of essay-making through conversation.
Talking points include (but are not limited to): Institutional fumbling; Re-imagining debt; Opting to not cite the cannon; Language and exclusivity; Normalising scrutiny of professionals; How whiteness replicates itself; Being irreverent to the history you’re taught (or teaching); American hardcore as a romanticised history; Boredom and performance.
Craig and Jess have provided a list of citations for topics mentioned, as well as a track list of songs played (below).
