Dérive with Stuart Tait
The dérive is often described, by artists, as a drifting walk in response to urban environments and variations on the dérive are employed to explore the city in ways that supposedly run counter to prescribed activities such as shopping or other forms of consumption. This dérive event began with a short discussion of different approaches to drifting before deciding, collectively, what approach we wanted to take for ourselves, including what the duration will be.
BIO:
Stuart Tait has been working as a collaborative artist since 2000, primarily in the art group AAS. The group is both a collaboration and a mutating, experimental artwork in its own right. Tait has also been part of several other less formal collaborations, including with Plastique Fantastique, Parfyme, Henrik Schrat, and Calum F Kerr. He was also part of Reactor, between 2010 and 2013, as well as being a former member of the Zero Point Collaboration. His practice-based Ph.D., ‘Becoming Multiple: Collaboration in Contemporary Art Practice’ (2009), studied historical avant-gardes as varieties of collaboration and drew comparison with contemporary practices. One specific research area was the Situationist International with a particular focus on the improvisational and collective nature of the dérive.
