Join us for the opening preview of (Re)Grounding, an exhibition at The NewBridge Project, co-produced by D6: Culture in Transit and Kyiv-based IZOLYATSIA.
Journeying from the industrial landscapes of Ukraine to former coal mines and community gardens of the North East, artists Alexandra Clod and Karolina Uskakovych respond to the climate crisis by exploring the shared industrial past of the UK and Ukraine and its impact today.
Curated by D6 curator in residence Lucy Nychai, the exhibition is part of the UK/Ukraine Season of Culture devised jointly by the British Council and the Ukrainian Institute.
There will be a paid bar and we will be operating a strict Challenge 25 Policy. The first hour of the exhibition preview will be dry and we will be serving alcohol-free refreshments. From 6pm – 8pm, alcoholic and soft drinks will be available for purchase. All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Welcome speeches will happen at approximately 6pm. The event will be documented. If you want to opt out of being photographed, please speak to a member of staff.
Access information
The NewBridge Project is situated in The Shieldfield Centre on Clarence Walk (off Stoddart Street). Our Gallery is on the First floor and is fully wheelchair accessible via lift. The Gallery can be located by following large written signs and staff will be available to direct visitors.
Large print exhibition leaflets will be available.
All floors have accessible toilets and the First floor has gendered toilets and toilets for all genders. Baby change facilities are available on the Lower Ground floor.
When you arrive at The NewBridge Project, you will enter on the Lower Ground floor through NewBridge Books where a member of NewBridge staff will greet you. There are 2 accessible parking spaces in front of the main entrance. There are a further 8 parking spaces in the car park at the front of the building.
The NewBridge Project staff team can assist with accessibility, give information about our exhibitions, workshops and events, and provide other information about the local area and other art and community spaces. They can be located by their blue staff lanyards. NewBridge staff are aware of hidden disabilities and will provide assistance where possible. (Re)Grounding is a new programme by D6: Culture in Transit, that explores the climate emergency in post-industrial contexts through two research residencies connecting artistic practice, heritage and communities in the UK and Ukraine.
We know the climate crisis spans social, political and environmental injustices that must be addressed to achieve a sustainable future. We are seeing these injustices play out in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which is deeply affecting the people and place, and destabilising global food and energy markets. We can see the climate crisis most impacting people with the least resources to tackle it. We can also look back to the global impact of the industrial revolution on the climate crisis today.
The selected artists Alexandra Clod and Karolina Uskakovych take these interconnections, asking what must be done to bring about the drastic change needed to limit the increase in rising temperatures. The programme includes two research residencies and an exhibition connecting practice, heritage and communities between the UK and Ukraine.
