Join curator, researcher and programme committee member Ellie Armon Azoulay for a tour of Resounding Diasporic Sonic Worlds, an exhibition and events programme exploring music and resistance among various communities and their diasporas.
This tour will focus on drums of resistance.
Ellie is hosting a series of tours, which delve into the key ideas, themes and featured works in Sonic Worlds. The tours are a chance to explore archiving, drumming as a form resistance, diasporic connections, and women’s sonic worlds.
Ellie Armon Azoulay is a cultural historian, curator and DJ. Her work is focused on archives of music and photography and explores issues of diasporic communities, music collecting, and cultures of protest and resistance. She is a resident at Slack’s Radio with her monthly show Diasporic Connections.
Ellie is currently a Leverhulme early career fellow at the department of English Studies at Durham University where she works on her new research project Sounds of Liberation: The Feminist Vernacular in Jamaican Folklore 1940-1980. This project focuses on the collecting, educational, performative and community based work of Olive Lewin and Louise Bennett Coverley, and other networks of women in Jamaica. She is also completing her first book Reclaiming the Lore: African American Music Collectors, Refusal and Anti-Preservationist Possibilities.
Resounding Diasporic Sonic Worlds has been developed by artist Ellie Armon Azoulay with The NewBridge Project’s Programme Committee: Holly Argent, Ellie Armon Azoulay, Dan Goodman, Kaan K, Shelly Knotts, and Seymour Mace.
