Shieldfield Youth Programme: public information meeting

Wed 5th August 2020

Dwellbeing Shieldfield and The NewBridge Project are currently working towards the launch of a new children and youth programme. This will involve regular activity for children and young people in Shieldfield for ages 5-21 years. We would love to share our plans and how you can be involved. If you are a parent, a young person (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult on Zoom), or a community member, come along to hear more.

Please register on Eventbrite or RSVP via email: admin@thenewbridgeproject.com

*Once you register you will be sent a zoom link, meeting number and password ahead of the meeting. Please get in touch if you need help with access to Zoom. Email admin@thenewbridgeproject.com or text Hannah on 07593 769 129.

This meeting will be online, but we will host a second, physical meeting or information session in September for those who are unable to attend this initial meeting – look out for posters and leaflets about this.

Background

The NewBridge Project and Dwellbeing Shieldfield are currently developing a new programme of activity led by and for young people in Shieldfield.

Due to the lack of current youth provision the programme will develop meaningful youth activity with young people in Shieldfield, ensuring that this is responsive to their needs and wants, with their vision at its centre. Working alongside a qualified part-time youth worker, a team of local volunteers, Dwellbeing members, and NewBridge staff, we will aim to work with as many young people as possible from Shieldfield . The development of the initial 18-month programme will be led by young people which will include weekly activities, monthly skills workshops, residential, trips, events and detached youth work/relationship building.

The focus of Dwellbeing and The NewBridge Project’s work is around art, activism and building community, knowledge and skills. We hope to bring this interest and experience to the Youth Programme, but activities will not be directed by this – it will be up to the young people involved to shape the activity of the programme.

About Dwellbeing Shieldfield

Dwellbeing Shieldfield is a welcoming, artistic and inclusive (soon to be) cooperative of Shieldfield residents and community members of all ages and backgrounds. Through our projects, research and events we share life together, support our neighbours and celebrate and empower our rich and diverse community.

Our aim is for community members to play an active role in shaping life in Shieldfield. We share our knowledge about the issues and challenges that affect our neighbourhood and work collectively to find alternative models for organising, learning and solidarity. Through these actions we aim to lead Shieldfield (and other neighbourhoods like it) toward self-reliance, resilience and interdependence.

About The NewBridge Project

The NewBridge Project is an active artist-led community supporting artists, curators and local communities. NewBridge produces a lively public programme of exhibitions, projects, commissions and events that are responsive to the environment in which we exist, and that places community-centred, experimental, collaborative and socially conscious programming at its heart. NewBridge is currently based across 2 sites in Newcastle and Gateshead, however, we are working with the Council toward a 5-year tenancy at the Shieldfield Centre from Spring 2021.
