Shieldfield Youth Voice

Shieldfield Youth Voice is a dedicated space for young people to meet, share ideas, work together, and find their own voices.

Shieldfield Youth Voice is a youth-led, collectively planned programme exploring music and social action. This year our young people, aged 10 and over, have been working with musician Kema Kay, and have written and produced songs about the need for local change, reflecting: “we want to feel like what we do is important, that it’s not just for NewBridge but the whole community.”

The group have been meeting regularly to reflect on their experiences, learn new skills, write songs and produce music. They are gaining knowledge of social action, raising their voices, calling to be valued and not underestimated – “we don’t get much but we have got a lot to give”! In early sessions they talked together about growing up and living in Shieldfield – what they love, what they want to change. These conversations were used as a starting point to write lyrics and create songs. Together they rapped and produced three new songs in Kema’s studio.

Shieldfield Youth Voice is developed in partnership with community cooperative Dwellbeing Shieldfield and supported by #iwill Fund and SHED.
