Much has been made of the changes we need to make if we are to reduce the impact of climate change and adapt to shifts in temperature that are already inevitable. But what about asking if there are real and justified reasons as to why we don’t act, or do more?
Dr. Jo Swaffield and Professor Derek Bell of Newcastle University are working to gather empirical evidence of how people respond to climate change, for that evidence to then shape new philosophical approaches to the environmental crisis. This lecture/workshop will present some of their findings and invite discussion around the themes of climate, mitigation, adaptation, our personal responsibility and response-ability to these urgent problems.
Dr. Jo Swaffield is a Research Excellence Academy Fellow in the politics department. She is working with Derek Bell (Newcastle) and Wouter Peeters (Birmingham) on the project: “Individual Responsibility for Realising Human Rights: Climate Change, Poverty and Other Problems and Aggregate Effects”.
is Head of Politics at Newcastle, and leads the Political Philosophy research cluster. His research is on environmental and social justice and he co-teaches a third stage undergraduate module, ‘Community-based research in politics’, which gives students the opportunity to conduct original applied research in collaboration with local voluntary and public sector organisations.
This talk is part of the Shift and Signal School, three days of workshops, sharing, live recordings and celebration of our commitment to work together for a flourishing future.
Shift and Signal is a commission by Dr Alex Lockwood, that creates a space in which to imagine how we can go deeper in our adaptations to the crises of the contemporary moment such as social inequality, climate change, and species extinction. The project is an attempt to shift us beyond the usual stuck conversations about how we implement change, and signal towards better ways of living that are now appearing.
The Shift and Signal School is part of Deep Adaptation. An ongoing programme of commissions, talks, events and workshops looking at how current social, civic and economic issues can be understood in relation to climate change.
