The NewBridge Project : Gateshead

Join us at The NewBridge Project : Gateshead for the opening of Storytilling, an exhibition by Leah Millar.

Leah will present a film installation/enquiry into the stories and myths through which we understand the world and learn to craft our own identities. Over the course of two seasons, Leah has been working as both a volunteer and an artist facilitator with the Comfrey Project, leading sessions on landscape informed image-making and storytelling. This time has informed thoughts on how the stories are held and cultivated: entwining truth, fiction, landscape and belonging.

Leah Millar (b.1982, Belfast) is an artist and film-maker whose practice is inspired by both the relationships she forms with nature and the material experience of constructed audiovisual landscapes. Often relating to particular sites, her films build worlds in which ideas about agency, memory and the physical and psychic experience of environments can be explored.

Her work uses photochemical film and experimental moving image to communicate the embodied human experience of physical and psychic landscapes. She is interested in how knowledge of touch can be communicated within hand-made and experimental images to challenge the binary between image and environment. She works with both celluloid and digital film in both cinematic and performative presentation, and has collaborated with artists and architects in her interrogation of the lived experience of environment. She is inspired by a material relationship to nature and the physical experience of images.
