The Retreat (Old Bowling Club House), ReCoCo, Saltwell Park, Gateshead (next to the lake and the old bowling greens)

As part of the For Solidarity events programme, we have teamed up with The Recovery College Collective (Recoco) to produce The Grass Roots Garden Party; a celebration of local organisations, community groups and projects that are doing good things for people and the planet.

Expect locally made produce, craft activities, nature walks, football, circus skills and live music.

This is a dry event with no alcohol. All ages welcome under 16s must be accompanied by a guardian.

The event is free and booking is not required.

What to expect!

We will be hosting incredible organisations, facilitators, artists and makers at The Grass Roots Garden Party, with stallholders and workshops happening throughout the day.

Beatrice Dale and Jim Spendlove will be holding an information stall showing some research looking at how honeybees use urban trees. Beatrice has been collecting pollen from honeybee hives and scanning the RGB code of each species of pollen used by honeybees. Jim has then created illustrations of the research activities which are coloured using only the RGB colours of the pollen collected during the corresponding month. They will also have some demonstrations of nectar and pollen measurements on the stall.

The Comfrey Project will be showing visitors how to take late summer (semi-ripe) cuttings.

Dingy Butterflies CIC will be facilitating a bee walk with an infra red camera focusing on the Buzzing Garden and the Wildlife Garden. There will be colouring and info sheets of the 10 target species of bee from the North East Bee Hunt, and a list of bees found in Bensham and Saltwell, with their preferred forage plants.

Friends of Saltwell Park will have a table at the event with information about Friends of Saltwell Park and how people can get involved; there will be a Heritage Walk to tell people some of the history of the Park; and also a tour of our newly planted Community Orchard.

Gateshead Football Club Community Foundation will be hosting free football coaching and penalty shootout with sweets for prizes.

Handcrafted is a charitable organisation based in Durham, Gateshead and Chester Le Street. They offer practical gathered activity, encouraging people to explore their creativity rather than reoffending, falling back into the cycle of addiction and becoming part of a community of acceptance. They offer woodwork, sewing, women’s only and mixed crafts sessions, cookery lessons and plastic recycling. At GRGP, they will be selling items made by trainees!

Scotswood Natural Community Garden provide education, volunteering and wellbeing opportunities in a safe and natural environment whilst promoting inclusivity. A wide range of people use the garden, from local school children, refugees and asylum seekers, to adults with dementia. At the Grass Roots Garden Party, they will be selling produce from their plant nursery and Veg Garden. All of the money raised goes back into the garden to allow community work to continue.

Tee Handcrafted knit as a therapeutic activity and sell what they make to buy materials to keep us going with knitting projects. They will be selling knitted goods and also taking commissions!

Plus a workshop and information stall from CoHut, an olfactory smelling workshop, prints from Overlay Press and so much more!
