The NewBridge Archive Project, led by artists Phyllis Christopher and David Hall, is a long-term and collaborative effort to document the community that forms in, and around, The NewBridge Project – studio artists, art workers, groups and community initiatives.
Rooted in NewBridge’s artist-led ethos, and shaped through relationships between studio holders, its neighbourhood, and the people and organisations of Shieldfield, this project seeks to capture the people, connections, and structures that sustain it.
At its heart, this project is about spending time together and recording a living snapshot of NewBridge. We would like to photograph you in your studios, with your artwork, or around the building as part of this process.
This is chance to have your photos taken by two amazing photographers and be part of a collective portrait of the many people who make up NewBridge! We want to spotlight your practices in the spaces where they begin to take shape!
You will have the final say on which images are selected from the shoot and are welcome to use the photographs however you want (headshots for your artist website or to stick on your fridge!). David and Phyllis will use the photographs for a new artistic project, which is evolving over time – they may be shared online, archived, and presented as part of an exhibition.

Phyllis Christopher’s body of work documenting lesbian visibility, sexuality and protest, Dark Room: San Francisco Sex and Protest, 1988-2002, was published by Book Works in 2022. Her work had previously been published in Nothing But The Girl: The Blatant Lesbian Image (co-edited by Susie Bright and Jill Posener), Photo Sex: Fine Art Sexual Photography Comes of Age (edited by David Steinberg), Art & Queer Culture (co-edited by Catherine Lord and Richard Meyer) and Aperture Magazine. In 2021, her work was the subject of a major retrospective organized between BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, and Grand Union, Birmingham. She lives in Newcastle where she conducts workshops, co-facilitates a community darkroom at The NewBridge Project, and continues to document the LGBTQ+ community.
David Hall (@nostalgia_kid) is a documentary and street photographer based in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Since 2020, he has been documenting and archiving the subculture and daily life of the North East through his ongoing series, ‘The Newcastle Project.’
He exhibited his work for the first time in 2021 in ’39 Pilgrim Street’, documenting the final months of Commercial Union House. In 2024, he presented ‘The Newcastle Project’ at The Newbridge Project, showcasing work developed during his year with Create / Disrupt.
He works out of a studio at The Newbridge Project and is very much community-based. Collaboration and mindfulness play a very important role in his practice.
