If you opt to attend remotely, a member of staff will contact you on the day of the workshop with a Zoom link and more info about the session and a digital code of conduct. If attending in person, arrive by 5:45pm for a prompt 6pm start.
This is an interactive session, and we encourage you to ask questions, share your suggestions, and actively participate in activities and discussions. If you prefer to listen, that’s perfectly fine too!
This is a hybrid event and will take place both online and in real life.

Penelope Payne (she/her) graduated from Newcastle University 1992, where she studied Fine Art. Afterward, she worked in London at Bronze Age Foundry and later as a Spatial and Interior Designer. Working in various aspects of the arts, she returned to a full time fine art practice in 2019. She has been involved in Middlesbrough Art Week since 2019 and the curator of the North East Open Call, Middlesbrough Art Week, since 2023.
Payne’s artistic practice is rooted in the exploration of female narratives, particularly the overlooked and unrecorded histories of ‘women’s work’. From her studio in Cullercoats, she creates a diverse range of work, including sculpture, site-specific installation and performative action. In one of her most significant bodies of work Payne reflects on the lives of the Cullercoats fisherwomen, using materials such as salt, tar, and text to create work that examines themes of female labour, empowerment and the quotidian.
UpSkill is an exciting programme of workshops focused on how to thrive as an artist; from writing to self-employment, network building to promoting yourself online and curating to designing your own workshop!
