Join artists Polina Chizhova-Wright and Rob Smith to explore local environmental data available through the Newcastle Urban Observatory and use it to make new creative projects.
We will explore datasets that are part of the Newcastle Urban Observatory, going out into the local area and collecting our own data. We’ll also unpack a data collection device to understand its inner workings.
Along the way, we’ll be considering who data collection is for, what kind of data is useful to the community, and how different types of data and data collection might help us understand the city in different ways. We’ll also explore ways to creatively represent data that interests us.
Please bring a laptop and some headphones if you have them, but bring yourself if you don’t! We will also have a selection of additional tech resources to play with.
We will be walking outside for part of the workshop, so bring outdoor clothing and shoes.
This event will not be catered, so please bring your lunch. There are also shops and cafes nearby if you need to purchase something.
Participants will work in groups to ask questions about data and explore what they would like to learn about their local environment. A short outdoor walk will introduce different data collection methods, followed by hands-on engagement with creative projects.
Designed for complete beginners, this session requires no prior experience with coding or computers. During the second half, there will be opportunities for those who want to get more hands-on with code.
Our building has lifts to the gallery, accessible and gender-neutral toilets, baby changing and breastfeeding facilities and two accessible parking bays. You can watch a walkthrough of our building and learn more about accessibility here.
