What Comes Next

Thursday 3 April 2025 10am–12pm Culture Lab

Join us on to we discuss the future of ‘meanwhile space’ in the arts, and the role of collaborative projects. What Comes Next will look at how to embed key ideas further and map out ways of working for the next seven years and beyond!

The second of two workshops, What Comes Next is designed to bring together artists, creative practitioners, local government and academics to explore how meanwhile and short-term spaces impact both artists and local communities.

What comes next? is part of a series of workshops funded by Newcastle University, these events bring together artists, artist organisations, creative practitioners, local government and academics to better understand the work that has already been done, forge new relationships, and consider (and shape) the work that needs to take place in the future.

This event follows on from Learning and Sharing, which looked at several recent collaborative projects that focused on meanwhile’ or temporary space, heritage re-use, the ‘activation’ of empty units and grassroots arts across the North-East, and the impact this work has on artists and communities. This included publications co-authored by NewBridge and academics from Newcastle University over the last five years, such as More Than Meanwhile Spaces I – III and Listening and Learning: A Social Impact Report.

We will be joined by Natasha Eves (Oxford Brookes) who will be sharing her work with SET Studios (London), before we ‘roadmap’ the next steps and the kinds of projects and work that would make the most difference in the years to come. If you have strong opinions on previous projects, want to shape something new, share some initial ideas, or are simply looking for collaborators – we would be very pleased to see you.

Everyone is welcome, but please do book your space.

This workshop is part of a School Impact Fund (SIF) project led by Dr Emma Coffield from the School of Arts and Cultures, Newcastle University. This workshop is the second part, following on from Listening and Sharing workshop.
