Work Party for Cheats with Rachael Clerke

Thu 18th November 2021 The Shieldfield Centre

5:45pm – 8pm (15 mins to settle in, event proper commences at 6pm sharp)
This is a real-life event but we also welcome remote participation if you can’t make it, a Zoom link will be provided!

Work Party for Cheats is a communal space for getting the stuff done that you just can’t get done. Over two hours we will endeavour to resolve as many unfinished tasks as we can, using all the skills and energy in the room to share, swap, steal and cheat our way out of our stuckness. Because doing other people’s work is easier than doing your own work, and collective satisfaction is better than individual smuggery.

To take part, please bring with you an unfinished or unresolved task, along with anything you think might be useful in resolving it.
This could be something that you can’t do because you don’t have the skills or don’t have time, or something you are just avoiding because it’s boring or complicated. Feel free to bring something even if you think it’s impossible to be solved by collective cheating on a Thursday evening. Here are some things I am not getting done right now to inspire you: update my website (can’t be bothered), learn the dance routine to Call Your Girlfriend by Robyn (really want to but not prioritising it for 5+ years), finish making a pair of trousers for my girlfriend (hard), work out how to describe my practice without undermining it or sounding like a dickhead (probably impossible).

We will work from the assumption that we have everything we need in the room to complete these tasks. This might not be true but we will try anyway. We will cheat.

Rachael Clerke is a Bristol-based artist working across many mediums. They make artworks that sit somewhere on the edge of live art and community infrastructure; playful experiments about what real life might look like if we were less concerned with what real life ‘should’ look like.

These have included: a performance score for 3-5 year olds to take power over institutional art space; a piece of gig theatre about concrete architecture featuring a drag king punk band; a book of 151 ideas for overthrowing the government; a quilt of data from the 2019 general election; a DIY business selling shares in a communal bicycle; a podcast about private renting.

Rachael is part of Interval, a collective of artists sharing a studio behind a clock above St Nicholas market in Bristol.

This event is part of Practice makes Practice, an artist development programme run by artists.

It focuses on giving people the skills they need to manage and develop their artistic practice and career.

Events are free for all NewBridge members (Studio, Associate, Hot-desk, Collective Studio, Create/Disrupt) or you can attend a one off event.
