Award Winning Spaces

We are pleased to announce that, alongside Topo Architects, we have received two awards for our renovation of The Shieldfield Centre.

In March we were delighted to receive the Adaptive Reuse award at The Lord Mayor’s Design Awards – which “shines a light on new buildings and developments that make an outstanding contribution to the quality and appearance of their communities.” We were one of eight winners awarded at a ceremony held at the Mansion House in Jesmond on 21 March 2024.

Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Cllr Veronica Dunn, said: “It was inspiring to see such a wide range of projects being recognised for their creative and innovative designs and for the positive contributions they have made in our communities. The judges were extremely impressed with the high calibre of entries and the talented teams behind these projects should be very proud of their achievements.” (source)

In April we had the fantastic news that we had also received the Architects’ Journal AJ Small Projects Sustainability Award. In their announcement Topo Architects said: “The project explored how, with a limited budget, a sustainable approach to adaptive re-use can deliver significant value to communities. The brief involved creating studios for over 120 artists, ceramics, print and wood workshops, a bookshop, an events space, gallery, flexible co-workspaces for communities to gather and associated offices.”

We were also recently successful in applying for an opportunity to work with Topo Architects on a consultation for feasibility study for the refurbishment of our Youth Room and Free Shop space – and are hoping to secure funding to make these plans a reality. Watch this space!

“It’s absolutely amazing to receive these awards which celebrate NewBridge’s refurbishment of spaces at the Shieldfield Centre, and which highlight our commitment to sustainability and reuse.  We feel we have created a fantastic space for artists and local communities alike; spaces that are now filled with art and activities that bring people together. It’s also been great to reflect back on the amazing collective work and effort that went into building this space back in 2021.”

NewBridge Gallery
