Create/Disrupt is a new programme for artists, aspiring arts workers, makers and producers who have not had formal training or undertaken a degree and are interested in pursuing a career in the arts.
The first cohort of Create/Disrupt members consist of diverse artists from across the North East with a shared desire to become arts workers. Create/Disrupt is for artists and aspiring arts workers who have not been to University or had formal training.
We launched this development strand in 2020 and started working together to co-create a programme of activity that reflected the interests, hopes and desires of the group. This has included research trips to national arts organisations, advocacy work within the sector, training and development opportunities that match the needs of the artists on the programme and began building a community and network of atypical arts workers.

“Create/Disrupt has provided a safe, non-judgemental space which has filled me with confidence and positivity to continue to make artwork and know that creation of all forms is valuable. Meeting like-minded people in a similar position has created a sense of unity and prosperity for all art and artistic processes, outside of traditional fine-art, of which I do not believe exists outside of the Create/Disrupt programme in such an encouraging and communal way.”
“I am a disabled person and have started my career as an artist and arts worker in my late 30s. The last few years have been incredibly isolating. Joining the create/disrupt community has helped me improve how I work with others and is a constant source of inspiration and peer to peer empowerment.”
