OPPORTUNITY

Practice makes Practice – Residency

Bursary: £1300 (accommodation & travel provided separately)
Duration: 4-week period
(Feb or March 2020 – time can be split across both months)
Deadline: Wednesday 2 October 2019, Midday

We invite artists to apply for Practice makes Practice – Residency. This one-month residency opportunity will provide artists with time and space to reflect on their practice within an active and engaged community of artists at The NewBridge Project. The residency will instill a spirit of collaboration, collectivity and exchange to generate peer learning, critical conversation and social interaction.

Practice Makes Practice – Residency will provide artists with time to test out ideas, experiment, develop networks, research new works/projects and explore new aspects of their practice without any expectation to produce new work.

This residency forms part of Practice makes Practice, an artist development programme run by artists for artists based at The NewBridge Project. During the residency, we will invite the selected artist in residence to input into the wider Practice makes Practice programme through instigating events, workshops or talks informed by their practice, feeding into their professional development and that of our members. We will provide a small budget for travel and fees to support this.

Practice Makes Practice – Residency is open to artists practicing in any art form and will be based within NewBridge Studios – a community of over 100 artists in Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead. We welcome proposals from artists keen to get involved and engage with The NewBridge Project, its programme and its members.

Previous artists who have undertaken this annual residency are; Caitlin Merrett King (2019), Nathaniel Whitfield (2018) and Gordon Douglas (2016).

More information:

The NewBridge Project is an active and vibrant artist-led community supporting the development of artists and curators through the provision of space for creative practice, curatorial opportunities and an ambitious artist-led programme of exhibitions, commissions, artist development and events.

The NewBridge Project was established in 2010 to provide exchange and support in an engaged and discursive community of artists. We develop artistic talent through artist development programmes, curatorial opportunities and provision of space. The shared workspace is a critical and collaborative environment that allows artists to discuss and develop new ideas and projects.
We aim to deliver an outstanding programme of exhibitions, performances, screenings, educational talks and workshops in consultation with artist members, creating a programme responsive to the socio, political and civic environment within which it exists and seeks to be a genuine community resource.

NewBridge Studios are situated in a Carliol House, a Grade II listed building in Newcastle and on Gateshead High Street, and offer space to artists at any stage of their career, working primarily within the field of visual art, with a desire to be part of a diverse and critically engaged community of over 100 artists and practitioners. The shared workspace is a collaborative environment that allows artists to discuss and develop new ideas and projects. http://thenewbridgeproject.com
