In June, ITV Tyne Tees joined us to capture the joyful and rebellious Uncanny Carnival—an event celebrating self-expression, silliness, and solidarity. Led by local comedian and programme committee member Seymour Mace, the Carnival united communities, organisations, and individuals for a vibrant day.
Described as both “a showcase of silly but also a serious reminder of our region’s status as a safe space,” the event invited people to show up as their whole selves, on their own terms, and honouring the fools and misfits who paved the way.
Frances Stacey, NewBridge’s Programme Director, reflected on the day: “Art plays an essential role in our everyday and in society. It’s transformative in people’s lives — creating belonging, connection, and a sense of place. It’s an everyday right for all people in this city and beyond.”
