We stand in solidarity with our trans friends, family and community and will continue to amplify the voices of trans and gender diverse people.
Following the Supreme Court ruling this April, on the interpretation of the Equality Act 2010, we want to make a clear statement in support of our transgender members and visitors, and update the list of resources we put together in July 2020.
We have made an effort to ensure this resource is intersectional, reflecting the fact that many people are facing hardship right now, on many fronts. If you have any suggestions for additions to improve the quality and depth of this page, please get in touch: comms@thenewbridgeproject.com
Toilets
NewBridge is usually open Wednesday 1 – 5pm and Thursday — Saturday 12 – 5pm. Our main toilets are all gender toilets, which means anyone can use them and they do not include gendered signage. You are welcome to visit to use our toilets, whether coming to see an exhibition or not. Please let us know if we can accommodate any additional needs. We can direct you to the gendered toilets in our members area, if these are required.

Bent Bars – a letter-writing project for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, gender-diverse, intersex, and queer (LGBTQ+) prisoners in Britain and Northern Ireland
Report unsafe toilets – if you are challenged or you observe someone policing a single sex space, you can use this confidential form to report it, to enable TransActual to track patterns, identify common themes and take steps to advocate on this issue at a national level

Be – Empowering Trans people in the North East – Be run weekly peer support meetings every Tuesday 6-8pm at One Strawberry Lane. “We welcome anyone who identifies as trans (including non-binary) or gender non-conforming and to those who are questioning their gender. Friends and family are also welcome to attend. Sessions are run as a drop-in, so no appointment or referral is needed.”
Northern Region Gender Dysphoria Service – who posted a statement of reassurance that the supreme court ruling has no immediate impact on their care or services, and does not affect their commitment to support the rights of trans people.

TopSoil – a queer gardening club held weekly at The NewBridge Project and our shared community allotment. These closed sessions intend to grow a garden and a community through a programme of co-created activity.
Cuttings: Ceremonies of Trans Grief – was a project developed with Kaan K and the NewBridge Programme Committee that took place in November and December 2024.
Committee members Kaan K and Holly Argent developed this Care Park to sit alongside Cuttings, designed as a resource for queer and trans people.
The Reading Room also collaborated with Conal McStravick, Holly Argent, Kaan K and Leo Hargreaves to create a contextual reading list to sit alongside the Cuttings, with titles from our collection. The books are available to borrow, or to browse while visiting NewBridge.
Training for organisations – Developed by Northern Pride & Curious Arts, to build confidence in creating safe, inclusive and welcoming environments for LGBTQIA+ people
The Wardrobe – formerly based at NewBridge, this clothes bank and safe space for trans, non-binary, intersex and genderqueer people has now moved to Orbis Community in Gateshead.
