Risa Tsunegi is doing a two-week residency at The NewBridge Project as part of Japan Now North. During the residency she will be creating work for OUT OF BOUNDS, taking place at Bloc Projects, Sheffield between February and March.
Join us for an artist talk with Risa, where she will be in conversation with Mark Pendleton, Lecturer in Japanese Studies at The University of Sheffield.
Within Risa’s work there is a subversive element at play. Often, what the viewer comes to comprehend of the sculptures through their initial encounter goes through a process of re-examination and change. Her works explore issues of humanity and materiality, while also retaining a playful quality. For OUT OF BOUNDS, Risa will be showing a selection of her recent works exploring identity, among other themes.
Biography
Risa Tsunegi(1982) was born in Gumma, Japan and studied painting at Chelsea College of Art and Design and received MFA from Glasgow School of Art. Her interest on physicality and depth created in paintings led her to work more on three-dimensional works. Recent exhibitions include “Causality and synchronicity” (The Container, Tokyo, 2019), “Between the Conscious and Subconscious” (Pierre-Yves Caër Gallery, Paris, 2018), “Bebop” (XYZ Collective, Tokyo, 2016) and “Terribilis Tubus” (Flux Factory, New York, 2012).
Japan Now North
Japan Now North is in its second of an initial three-year programme of bringing Japanese artists, authors and filmmakers to the north of England, with the aims of growing awareness of Japanese arts and culture amongst audiences in the North and developing links with art communities and institutions in Japan. Our ultimate goal is to build sustainable programmes of artist exchange and collaboration. The 2019 Visual Arts programme, including an artist residency, group exhibition and artist talks in Sheffield and Newcastle, is organised by the University of Sheffield’s School of East Asian Studies, in conjunction with Bloc Projects and The NewBridge Project, and supported by Modern Culture, the Japan Foundation, Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation and Arts Council England.
