Thank u, next is a workshop and sharing session, looking at how to prioritise our selves within our art practices, putting personal contentment over professional commitment.
Basically I’m tired of going to openings and hearing everyone talk about how tired they are, including myself. We have all become our own un-paid interns somehow, chasing an ever ‘elusive’ success. I’ve always felt a bit of a dischord between the value placed upon us by institutions and artworld, and the value I feel in my <3
In this workshop we will be ‘re-thinking’ what it means to be a successful artist together. We will be working on our inner calm through mindfulness and meditation and discussing how to put our emotional needs at the core of our practice, which helps us to collaborate, communicate n makes everything much better xx 🙂
qt collective was founded by me, Emily Simpson @emilysurnamexox_x in Autumn 2018 as a curatorial practice, looking at popular culture and the way we live, lol and love online and offline, as the two spaces increasingly combine.
The word ‘collective’ might sound daft here but it is central to my thinking as a curator – qt collective aims to gently dismiss the implied hierarchies between curator, space and artist, acknowledging the value of care and community in this exchange. I want to put wellbeing at the forefront of any communication, helping to build the artworld I’ve always wanted see. It’s important to create a dynamic where we feel its ok to state our emotional needs, ask daft questions, send each other memes, and find ways to sustain and support each other. Representation is also super central to this thinking, building a space where all voices can be held an amplified, and all voices feel included. We are all qt’s afterall 🙂
I founded ‘oh kay gall’ in 2019 in partnership with Bootham School, York, and will be curator in residence until July 2019 when the residency ends – passing the gallery onto the next. I also won Crate’s curatorial award in 2018, for ‘when the c l ouds come in’ and have notably curated ‘i miss u said the lol cats’ this year, a show looking at feels and felines.

Practice Makes Practice is an artist development programme run by artists for artists.
