Stu Brew micro-brewery take-over

5 - 6 June 2015 ProjectSpace

Stu Brew Student Micro-Brewery: Drop-in demonstrations & beer tasting

Stu Brew is Europe’s first ever microbrewery to be managed by and for students based at Newcastle University. We invited members of the public to come along for a demonstration and to try the results. The brewery took over our Project Space bringing a range of hops and malts for people to see, smell and taste. They used their Braumeister 20 litre brewing kit for mini-workshops to talk members of the public through the process.

Stu Brew is a partnership between SCAN (Student Community Action at Newcastle) at the Students’ Union and Chemical Engineering & Advanced Materials department. The profits from the beer sales are being invested back into training so that more students can learn the art of craft brewing. The microbrewery is working towards being as environmentally sustainable as possible. With support from NUS’s Student Green Fund, the team are working hard to manage brewery waste responsibly, limit energy and water usage, and reduce the brewery’s carbon footprint.  The Stu Brew team are passionate about creating great craft beers which everyone can appreciate.

This drop-in session formed part of the events programme for Urban Organisms, a project that examined and creatively explored food sustainability in cities.
