Leah Miller-Biot

Working across sculpture, painting, drawing and printmaking, I explore the possibilities and limits of art as a cathartic expression of feelings and desires by mining my own biography, mental states and personal traumas. My work investigates my changing relationship to my body fed through a long term interest in the multiplicities of the meaning of the word gesture and its relationship to object and image making. As well as, and sometimes in conflict with this, my work has a distinctly feminist politics. It is a radical reclamation of space for female bodies, desire and rage, and a symbolic dismantling of the phallocentric order of represented desire. It is a politics that bases itself in material explorations of the collapsing of sensorial, experiential and emotional boundaries – a process that is so key to many experiences including desire, rage and the aesthetic experience
